The song conveys the dangers of living on the streets of Compton, California and South Central Los Angeles, but it also speaks of the allure of "gangsta life" Since its release, the song has been covered or remade several times, including by The Game, Mack 10, and the 57th Street Rogue Dog Villians with Tech N9ne.

The song includes samples from The Headhunters' "God Make Me Funky," Steve Arrington's "Weak At The Knees," Boogie Down Productions' "My Philosophy," and William DeVaughn's "Be Thankful For What You Got," among others.
